Rosen Crowd-Sources Skube Response

In yesterday's Online Publishing Update, we included a quote from former journalist and current Elon University Prof. Michael Skube’s recent Los Angeles Times op-ed . Here’s the quote: "The blogosphere is the loudest corner of the Internet, noisy with disputation, manifesto-like postings and an unbecoming hatred of enemies real and imagined. And to think most bloggers are doing all this on the side."

And, predictably (but validly), some journalists and prominent bloggers roared. One of those blogger/journalists is Jay Rosen, who is a professor at New York University, writes the blog PressThink and is very involved in NewAssignment.net.

Jay Rosen’s response was published as a “blowback” in today’s Los Angeles Times. Please go read it. In the first paragraph, Rosen calls Skube’s piece “irretrievably lame.” The rest of the op-ed is good, too – well-supported with some interesting examples of journalistically successful blogging. Rosen even used his own blog to put together the "partially-crowdsourced" blowback.

For a few other responses to Skube’s op-ed, consult yesterday’s Online Publishing Update. (If you aren’t getting the Online Publishing Update over e-mail, it’s just one of many good reasons to join the Digital Media Federation through the Newspaper Association of America.)
